Spanish I is a curriculum-based interactive multimedia program. What does that mean?
Testing has shown that we learn a language best when we read, hear, write, see graphically, and interact with it. Spanish I is designed to help you master the Spanish language through comprehensive instruction, modeling featuring native Spanish speakers, and by getting you to use the language through a substantial number of multi-formatted drills and exercises. As you learn one concept, you build on it to learn the next, and so on, just as you would learn in an academic environment. But with Spanish I, you get one-on-one instruction at your own pace, so you can maximize your learning and really learn Spanish.

How far will Spanish I take me?
Spanish I is the equivalent of a comprehensive first-year college Spanish course. By the time you’ve gone through the entire program, you will have a better understanding of and ability to converse in basic Spanish than most college students who have completed a first-year course. While you will probably not be able to have a deep discussion about economics, politics, medicine, or law after completing this course, you will have established the foundations and understanding of Spanish—not to mention Spanish speaking ability—necessary to attack those subjects more successfully as you continue your study. Does Spanish I teach by immersion?
Many language products promise to teach you Spanish quickly and easily by simply “immersing” you in the language. Don’t be fooled by the hype. Learning a foreign language can be fun and fulfilling, but achieving the ability to communicate effectively in a foreign language requires effort and a learning system that allows you to read, hear, write, see graphically, and interact with Spanish. Immersion is meaningless if you don’t know the basic structures of the language and are unable to use them effectively.

Does Spanish I utilize voice recognition tools to teach Spanish?
Many products on the market will help you mimic some Spanish words and phrases, but few, if any, will actually empower you to create well-formed sentences and engage in meaningful conversation in Spanish. After you learn how to do that with Spanish I, feel free to spend your time and money on other programs that do little more than let you hear yourself talk.

Who teaches Spanish I?
All of the examples, models, and exercises in the program feature native Spanish speakers so you know that what you hear is authentic. The tutorials are taught by Del K. Shumway, Ph.D., a 30-year veteran Spanish instructor who began his own study of Spanish in Mexico in 1960. He has taught at several major universities and recently retired as the chair of the foreign language department at Utah Valley University.

Who has successfully used Spanish I?
Thousands of students, professionals, and others have successfully used Spanish I over the years to really learn Spanish. Some of these include students at the University of Miami, Utah Valley University, East Central Community College (Decatur, MS), Mount St. Mary’s College (Los Angeles), St. John’s Seminary College (Camarillo, CA), and high schools and junior high schools across the country, homeschoolers everywhere, professionals at the Internal Revenue Service (Memphis), Questar (Salt Lake City), and the Utah County Health Department, educators required to take Spanish language courses through the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and many others.

Spanish programs often cost hundreds—and sometimes even thousands—of dollars. Why is Spanish I so much less?
No fluff. No hype. Not a lot of bells and whistles. Just the most comprehensive beginning Spanish language tutorial available. Spanish I was developed as a tool to help people really learn Spanish. We’d like to help as many people as possible, so we keep our prices low. And to make our “students” feel even better, we stand behind our program with a 110% guarantee.

Do you really guarantee that I’ll learn Spanish?
Absolutely. If you use our program—if you actually go through the tutorials and the exercises—we have no doubt that you will really learn Spanish. If, after doing so, you can’t speak Spanish at the level of a second-year college student, simply return the software to us and we’ll refund your money. No questions asked. And for the trouble, we’ll also send you a $10 Amazon.com gift card to use any way you wish. That is our 110% guarantee.
